The Heart of John Proctor essays The play, The Crucible was written by Arthur Miller. It is a play about the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts. Millers motivation to write this play came from his own experience with McCarthyism, which was basically blaming people for something they had no factual proof of. The main character in The Crucible is John Proctor. Proctor is very strong willed, brave, and honest. Throughout the entire play, John Proctor showed that he was a strong willed man. He showed this in the beginning of the play by saying to Abigail, I will cut off my hand before Ill ever reach for you again (839). He had relations with Abigail earlier and he knew that the right thing to do was to let her go. He displayed his strong will when he refused to let his wife die because of his own sins. He would do anything to save her life. Proctor said to Mary Warren, My wife will never die for me! I will bring your guts into your mouth but that goodness will not die for me! (862). Proctor also was determined to prove that the witch trials were a lie. Abigail told him exactly what happened so he knew the truth. Proctor also knew all those people had died for no reason at all. Proctor was also a very brave man. He was determined to prove Abigail and the girls wrong. He knew it was wrong that innocent people were dying. He showed bravery when he stood up for his wife and admitted to adultery in order to save her life. Even though the confession would ruin his name, he was brave enough to admit his sin. The bravest thing that Proctor did in the play was choosing death over life. At first, he said, I want my life (884). He confessed to witchcraft, and then he realized he would have lost his name even if he lived. He was brave enough to die and leave with a good name and die proud.
